Extremeties (2010)

Extremeties for flute and string bass

Tess Miller, my spouse, needed a piece with this instrumentation so that she could play with our good friend Melissa Straus (for whom I wrote Dementia in A).  Lots of what they play together is written for flute and cello, or flute and marimba…but very little extant music exists for flute and bass.  It seemed only natural to create a piece that explores the obvious range differences between these two polar extremes, in both instances:  low flute and high bass, and then high flute and low bass.  The result is as surprisingly lyrical as it is intensely angular.
