Fin de la semestre!

Wow...I know that "time flies" and all, but I can hardly believe I'm at the end of another semester. This is the last time I'll be able to be consumed ONLY with final tests and grades: the baby makes her debut this summer, so from now on I get to try to cram all that grading in PLUS be a good family man! In all truthfulness, I couldn't be more excited!

I attended the ASCAP "I Create Music" Expo in Hollywood on April 19th - 21st. What a fantastic time! I sat in on presentations and workshops with many, MANY Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriters: Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Hal David, Bill Withers, Holly Knight, Desmond Child, and the magnificent Randy Newman. I came away with a new appreciation of the craft of songwriting, and hopefully my efforts from this point on will show that sense of renewed purpose.

I took a red-eye flight home from L.A., arriving in Detroit just after 5:00am on April 22nd...just in time to drive home, get cleaned up, and attend the premiere of Fanfare and Overture! All I can say is...WOW! I'm so honored that the Central Michigan Area Concert Band commissioned me in the first place; any time someone wants to PAY you for the art you create...well, that's a pretty high compliment. And then their PERFORMANCE! Conductor Claude Lemmer really knows how to get the most out of his group, and the dedication of the individual players was astonishing. I made the front page of the Morning Sun (Mt. Pleasant newspaper) the next day, and my smile says it all: it was simply a fantastic performance, and I couldn't have been more pleased.

Criss is about halfway done, and I'm gunning to have it completed before our daughter gets here. Then: it's time to tackle that big symphonic project I've been hinting at. I have a special request to send out to a particular industry bigwig; more on this as it develops. Otherwise I've shipped off Tango Fantasy and Cork Pine Suite to C. Alan Publications, and once I make a couple dozen gratis copies of Fanfare and Overture, that'll be heading over to Greensboro as well. It's been a good year for me: lots of music written, and even some playing gigs. Life is good!
